Record 27 – The Door with a Secret
We slipped through the cracked entrance of a mid-rise building. The lobby smelled like old carpet, dust, and something faintly human – food traces clinging to the air like ghosts that didn’t know they were gone. Every scent layered on top of another, forming a trail even hunger couldn’t ignore.
Repsik moved ahead, sniffing each apartment door as we climbed the dim hallway. Some were shut tight, sealed as if the people behind them had locked fear inside. Others hung slightly open, caught on their hinges, shifting an inch with each breath of the wind. A few swung gently, knocking against their frames like they were asking to be noticed.
Then we found it – a door open just by an inch. A thin line of darkness inside. A thin line of scent drifting out.
Repsik pushed his shoulder against it. Nothing. The door stayed stubborn, heavy, stuck in place. He tried again, harder. Still no movement.
I watched him struggle, then padded forward. Instinct nudged me, not with fear, but with curiosity dressed as confidence. I crouched, jumped, and landed on the metal handle. My weight pressed it down.
It turned.
The click was soft, almost shy, but the sound felt enormous. Like opening the world with my paws.
We pushed the door wide enough to slip inside.
The apartment was small and messy, with clothes on chairs and dishes on counters, frozen in the middle of some human’s last ordinary moment. The scent of old life stuck to everything – stale air, muted soap, dust waiting too long to rest. A bowl on the floor sat dry and empty, edges crusted, untouched for days.
But the kitchen… the kitchen held a promise. A faint, dusty scent of food hiding behind layers of forgotten smells.
We followed it.
Toward a cabinet where the trace of dry kibble lingered like a whisper.
