Record 45 – Claws in the Shadows

When we returned to the storage room, the air inside was sharper, tense enough to sting. Soot paced at the entrance in tight, angry circles. His fur bristled along his back, every hair standing like a warning. His pupils were wide, almost black.

“He came here,” Soot hissed, voice rough with fear he refused to admit. “The tom with the scar on his cheek – Nox. He sniffed around our scent marks.”

The name hit the room like a dropped stone. Nox. He had followed us. Or tracked us. Or simply decided we mattered enough to investigate.

The fragile balance we had been trying to build cracked at the edges. Repsik stiffened beside me. Lima shrank into the doorway, trembling so hard her whiskers shook. Ridge stepped out of the shadows, his tail low but his eyes keen, alert, measuring the danger.

“Night predators,” he said quietly. “Territory challengers. Before the awakening, they fought quietly. Now… they think.”

The words curled into the air like cold smoke. Thinking predators. Thinking rivals. Thinking threats.

I felt tension rise in my chest – not fear, not instinct, something heavier. Understanding. Our group was no longer hidden. No longer a secret. We were visible. Vulnerable. Noticeable.

And by simply existing, by surviving, by planning… we became a threat to others doing the same.

The hallway lights hummed softly above us. Then dimmed. Not a flicker. Not a glitch. A pattern. Slow.
Steady. Almost like breathing.

Every cat froze. Every ear twitched. Every tail stalled mid-motion.

The city was listening again. Listening as we argued, as we struggled to hold our place in a world waking too fast.

Whatever came next, we were no longer alone in the shadows – and the shadows themselves were no longer empty.
