Record 66 – Warm Dust on the Air

Ridge guided us through a narrow service alley behind an empty hotel, his steps sure and steady. The metal service door ahead was crusted with frost, hinges stiff, but not locked. Ridge tested it with his shoulder, and it gave just enough to open. His confidence wasn’t pride – it was experience. He knew these human places. He knew where warmth hid.

The moment we stepped inside, the scent reached us: warm dust, heated metal, the faint breath of old machinery still alive somewhere below. It wasn’t strong, but it was real. A promise.

Lima inhaled sharply, her whole body shivering with relief. The fear in her eyes softened for the first time since dawn. Soot’s ears perked up despite his irritation; warmth had a way of breaking through even his anger. Repsik moved ahead a few steps, ears swiveling to follow a low rumble beneath the floor.

I felt something else. Not just heat. Not just safety.

A presence – thin, quiet, woven into the air like static. As if the building itself was aware of us. As if something inside its walls had been waiting.

The warmth drew us forward, but the awareness made my fur rise. Still, survival came first.

We followed the sound. Down the metal stairs. Toward the boiler room.
