The Bowl That Stayed Full

The Bowl That Stayed Full

The bowl was full when Slip arrived.

That alone made him suspicious — not because he understood traps, but because full bowls usually meant someone nearby. He circled it once, sniffed, then sat down a short distance away.

He waited.

No footsteps came. No voice called his name. The air stayed still.

After a while, Slip lost interest. A drifting smell from the street promised something newer, possibly better. He stood up and wandered off.

By evening, the bowl was still there. The food untouched. Cold.

Slip did not return.

Later, rain washed the bowl clean. Whatever kindness had been offered quietly expired.

Slip slept under a staircase that night, slightly hungry, but safe — never knowing that someone had waited longer than he did.
