Record 5 – I Took My First Step Outside
The hallway felt tight around me. It was like the walls were holding their breath. But I kept walking. The door to the outside was still slightly open. Just a thin crack of light. Like if someone slipped out in a hurry and never came back. I pushed it wider with my paw. It made a soft creak, and for a moment I almost ran back inside. Almost.
Cold air brushed my whiskers. It smelled like old rain, dust, and something sharp I couldn’t name. A city smell, but not the usual one. This one felt… hollow. I stepped out anyway. My paws shook a little, not from fear but from the size of everything around me. The street stretched in all directions, empty and bright, like the world got wiped clean overnight.
The pavement under my paws was rough. Tiny pieces of grit stuck to my pads, but I didn’t stop. I kept moving, head low, tail straight. I needed to see more. To understand more. The silence outside was worse than inside. No footsteps. No wheels. No voices dropping pieces of gossip onto the sidewalks. Only the wind turning old papers in circles.
I walked toward Times Square. I don’t know why I chose that place. Maybe because humans loved it so much. Maybe because it always flashed and shouted and glowed. Maybe because, if anything strange happened, that place should remember it. My paws made soft taps as I moved, one after another, steady now. My heart calmed the more I looked around. Empty didn’t mean dead. Empty just meant waiting.
As I got closer, I felt something. Not a sound. Not exactly. More like a tremble in the air. A tiny shake. A hint of a voice hiding inside the silence. I stopped. Listened. It could have been nothing. A dream. Or just the city breathing weird after being left alone.
But I’m sure I heard something there.
A voice, or maybe just a dream.
I’ll go back.
Editor’s Note – from the Chief Editor of Cats Over the World
These first five records are small, but they open the door to a world that is already shifting beneath Murria’s paws. Nothing dramatic happens yet – no chases, no revelations – and yet everything has already changed. You can feel it in the quiet rooms, the empty hallway, the strange brightness of the morning that refuses to explain itself.
This is the moment when a simple mind begins to wake. When instinct slowly gives way to thought, and fear begins to mix with curiosity. Murria steps from her blanket to the window, from her bowl to the street, and each step carries a quiet courage she does not notice yet.
These early entries have a gentle heartbeat. They read like the first breaths of a world about to speak – soft, uncertain, but full of promise. And for those who know where this story leads, these pages glow with an extra warmth: here, in these first steps, the future begins to take shape.
Stay close as you read.
The small things here will matter later.
