Record 2 – The Food Bowl and the Mirror

Record 2 – The Food Bowl and the Mirror

The first place I went was the kitchen.
My paws knew the way.
They always know the way.
Food is simple.
Food never lies.

But today… it lied.

My bowl was empty.
Not “someone forgot to fill it” empty.
Not “I already ate it” empty.
Just… empty like it hadn’t been touched in a long, long time.

The water bowl was still.
No bubbles.
No ripples.
As if even water was holding its breath.

I nudged my food bowl with my paw.
It made a loud, hollow sound.
The kind of sound that bounces around inside you and whispers,
“There’s no one here.”

I didn’t like that sound.
Not one bit.

I looked around the kitchen.
Everything was in its place.
Things should have felt normal.
But normal was gone.
Like it got up and left with the humans.

Then I saw it.
The mirror on the cabinet door.
I’ve walked past it a thousand times.
Never cared.
Mirrors don’t talk.
Mirrors don’t smell like anything.
Mirrors don’t feed you.

But today, something pushed me to look.
Really look.

A cat stared back at me – green eyes wide, whiskers shaking, fur puffed like a frightened dust ball.
But this time…
This time I didn’t just see a cat.

I saw me.

Not the shape.
Not the colors.
Not the cute little pink nose humans always touched.
But the “me” behind the eyes.
A thought.
A spark.
A tiny “I” floating in the middle of all that fear.

I leaned closer.
The cat leaned closer too.
I blinked.
The cat blinked too.
I whispered inside my head,
“That’s me.”
And the cat in the mirror whispered it back.

Then another idea slipped in.
Soft, shy, and strange.
“Say it.”

Say what?
My name?
The name humans used?
The name that meant treats and pets and warm blankets?

I opened my mouth.
Nothing came out.
My throat felt tight.
My tongue felt heavy.
Words are still new.
They tickle and sting at the same time.

I tried again.
“Mmm…”
It sounded like a broken purr.

I tried harder.
“Mur…”
My heart jumped.
That was almost it.
Almost me.

One last try.
“Mur…ria.”

The word came out small.
Crooked.
Almost falling apart.
But it was real.
A real word.
My word.

The mirror-cat looked surprised too.
We both heard it.
We both felt it.
Like a tiny door opened somewhere inside.

If I can say my name…
Maybe I can say more.
Maybe I can say the truth I feel crawling under this strange, bright morning. And tomorrow…
I’ll try to say the truth about this day.
