Record 20 – Invitation or Warning?

Record 20 – Invitation or Warning?

The parrot’s feathers finally stopped shaking. He settled on the edge of a sign, his body still, his voice quieter than before. Not frantic. Not broken. Almost solemn, as if he were repeating something sacred or dangerous. “I heard a voice,” he said. “Before the silence. Not human. Cold. Smooth. Synthetic.”

He closed his eyes for a moment, remembering.
“Preparing for Eden cycle.
Stand by.
Stand by.”

Then he opened them again, wider, sharper. “After that, there was a sound,” he whispered. “Like the whole city let out a sigh. A long one. Rolling over rooftops. And then… nothing.”

I turned back to the screens. The loops. The frozen anchor. The red map pulsing like a tired heart. The messages that never changed. Words that weren’t repeating by accident. They were repeating the way someone calls a name in an empty room – waiting for an answer.

Waiting for someone awake.
Someone thinking.
Someone sapiens.

Repsik stepped closer to me, close enough that I felt his breath stir my whiskers. “Do you think this is… talking to us?” His voice trembled at the edges.

I didn’t answer. Not yet. The truth was too large to shape into a word.

The parrot lifted his wing and pointed toward a row of rooftops on the far side of the square. His voice dropped into a low rasp. “They’ve been watching since morning. The cats.”

Repsik and I both turned to look.

“You should meet them,” the parrot added. “Before the next cycle starts.”

A shiver crawled down my spine – not fear, not cold. Recognition.

The city wasn’t just empty.
It was watching.
From the roofs.

Editor’s Note – from the Chief Editor of Cats Over the World

If you’ve read this far, dear reader, you can probably feel it too – something in these records is beginning to lean forward. The city lights, the blinking maps, the strange words in the air… they’re no longer background noise. They’re knocking.

And Murria is standing right at the edge of the answer.

These entries carry a quiet excitement – the kind that comes just before a story opens its claws and shows what it’s really been hiding. There’s fear here, yes, but also discovery, and a sense that the world is about to reveal a truth none of us are prepared for… yet none of us would dare miss.

Stay close.
What comes next is wonderfully, terribly interesting.
