Record 55 – The Long Shadows of the Empty City
We walked through the frozen streets as a small cluster of shapes in a world built for giants. Frost cracked under our paws with every step. The city around us felt taller than before – darker, heavier, watching from every window like a sleeping creature with half-open eyes.
Street signs creaked when the wind pushed them.
Traffic lights swung on loose cables, clinking softly like metal bones.
Somewhere above, a cooling tower groaned as it finally lost its heat.
Lima whimpered when a sudden gust cut straight through her thin fur. Repsik moved closer to her side, guiding her gently around broken glass and icy patches, speaking soft words she barely heard.
Soot walked ahead of all of us, tail flicking in sharp, irritated motions. He pretended the cold didn’t bother him, but the tension in his shoulders said otherwise.
Ridge stopped now and then, sniffing the air with the calm caution of an older survivor. His pauses made us all slow down – not because he asked, but because his instincts had saved him through winters far worse than this.
I glanced at the pavement. Our shadows stretched long and thin behind us, warped by the gray morning light. For a moment they looked like more than silhouettes – like the outline of something close to a tribe. Weak, hungry, and unsure, but moving as one.
That’s when I saw it.
A billboard on the corner – dead for a full day now – flickered. Just once. Then again.
flash-flash-flash… pause… flash
The same pattern. The same rhythm from yesterday.
A signal with no sender.
A message meant for… someone.
Only I noticed.
I turned my gaze away before the others could see the worry in my eyes.
The cold pressed on our backs, pushing us forward.
Survival had to come first.
