Record 57 – Instinct Hunts, Intelligence Navigates

Ridge took the lead without asking. He didn’t boast or command. He just moved with the quiet certainty of a cat who had survived more winters than the rest of us combined. His steps were steady, his nose low to the ground, his ears tuned to the faintest hum beneath the city’s skin.

“He knows where old heat hides,” I realized. Basements. Boilers. Places built in another era – places that might still hold warmth even when everything else failed.

Soot walked with a constant grumble, tail lashing.
“Why follow him? He’s old,” he snapped.

Repsik answered before I could.
“He’s old because he knows where to survive.”

Soot didn’t reply, but the silence that followed felt like reluctant agreement. The cold was too sharp for pride. Too dangerous for arguments. Every breath came out in thin clouds. Every step hurt. We had no room for ego – only for movement.

As we followed Ridge through the frozen streets, something subtle began to form within the group. Not a plan. Not a council. But the shape of it.

Ridge walked in front, the navigator, reading the city like a map only he could see.
I kept the pace steady, the stabilizing voice that kept fear from breaking us apart.
Repsik stayed close to Lima, speaking softly, easing her tremors – an unexpected diplomat.
Soot moved along the edges, scanning shadows, ready to strike at anything – blunt force, instinct honed by hard life.
And Lima… she showed us the emotional temperature of the group. Every shiver, every flinch reminded us how fragile we still were.

We weren’t trying to build roles.
But the roles were forming anyway.
As if something inside each of us already knew where we belonged.

Ridge suddenly stopped. His whiskers twitched. His eyes narrowed.
“This way,” he said, voice low. “I smell warm dust.”
