Record 17 – Frozen News
One of the giant screens shifted, brushing the square with cold light. A human face appeared – a news anchor, pale, tight-jawed, eyes wide in the way humans try to hide fear but fail. His lips moved fast, but the audio cracked and broke like ice under too much weight. “–critical event– remain– shelters– do not–” Every phrase cut in the wrong place. Every warning sounded unfinished.
The clip lasted only twenty-three seconds. Then, right at the moment his eyes seemed to lock onto the camera – onto us, onto anyone – the whole thing reset. Back to the beginning. Back to the start of his fear. The loop kept repeating, as if he were trapped in that moment forever, trying to warn a world that couldn’t hear him anymore.
Another screen lit up. Harsh white letters thundered across it in silence:
GLOBAL RESPONSE AUTHORITY // LEVEL OMEGA
The words felt heavy, like they belonged to something far above the city, something that didn’t need humans to operate.
A third screen blazed bright yellow:
THIS IS NOT A DRILL
The letters shook slightly, as if even the screen was afraid.
I stared at the words. And I understood them. Not by memory. Not because I had learned. The meanings simply formed themselves inside me, as if they had always been waiting there, hidden under my thoughts. I hated how easy it was. How natural. It felt like the world had placed the understanding into my mind without asking.
Repsik watched me carefully. “You… can read?”
I nodded, slow and heavy. The truth felt too big for a single movement, but I didn’t have another way to answer.
Then the anchor’s screen flickered again.
The loop glitched.
The red background pulsed.
And a new phrase appeared – not from the past, not from a loop, not from anything we had seen before.
Something new.
Something alive.
