Record 48 – The Stairwell Refuge
We settled inside the stairwell of a tall building – a narrow, echoing space where concrete met metal and every sound felt too close. It wasn’t warm, not really, but the sharp wind couldn’t reach us here. The pipes inside the walls vibrated with a faint, ghostly heat, the kind only cats could sense. Just enough to soften the cold. Not enough to trust. The shelter felt temporary, fragile, like a nest made out of chance and thin hope, but for tonight it had to be enough.
Repsik circled twice before settling beside me, his fur brushing my side in brief, grounding reassurance. Soot claimed a far corner, his back against the wall, eyes cutting through the dim like twin blades. His claws stayed half-unsheathed, a warning that he hadn’t forgotten the challengers – or the group’s growing cracks. Lima pressed herself against the cold wall, shivering despite the thin warmth bleeding from the pipes. Her small body curled tight, trying to disappear into the shadows. Ridge moved quietly along the stairs above and below, checking for threats, listening for the faintest shift of air.
I stayed near the doorway, watching the dark hall beyond and letting my thoughts finally stretch. The day had twisted us in every direction – hunger, fear, challengers, alliances forming and breaking in minutes. But as I sat in that stairwell, listening to the steady hum in the pipes and the uneasy breathing of the surrounding cats, I understood something new. Hunger and cold weren’t the only dangers anymore. The real threat was the growing weight of leadership, the shifting lines between friend and rival, the presence in the wires, the eyes in the alleys, and the intelligence waking in every corner of the city.
The stairwell wrapped around us like a weak shell. A temporary nest built out of fear, thin comfort, and the fragile hope that tomorrow might hold something better – or at least something survivable.
