Record 49 – The Mind That Wouldn’t Rest

Sleep stayed far from me. My body begged for rest, but my mind kept moving. Thoughts circled and circled, sharper than instinct, louder than hunger. They came in waves, each one clearer than the last.

I thought of Lima – her trembling, her wide eyes, her need for safety.
I thought of Soot – anger burning in him like a second heartbeat.
I thought of Ridge – steady, calm, always thinking one step ahead.
And Nox – cold, smart, dangerous in a way claws could never be.

Then came Repsik – curious, gentle, trying to understand a world that no longer fit the rules he knew.

But it wasn’t just the cats.
I saw again the rooftop watchers, still and silent.
I felt the pulses in the pipes under my paws.
I remembered the lights that flickered in perfect rhythms, like breathing.
And the billboard’s white message burned behind my eyes:
BEHAVIORAL COHESION DETECTED.

I tried to push it all away.
Tried to breathe slowly.
Tried to let sleep come.
It didn’t.

The same idea kept rising, no matter how many times I buried it.
Nothing in this world is acting by chance.
Not the machines.
Not the lights.
Not the cats.
Not even me.

I felt something growing inside my mind – fast, bright, almost too large for my skull. Like my thoughts were outrunning the rest of me. Like I was changing quicker than I could understand.

I lay my head down. I closed my eyes.
But the thoughts didn’t fade.
They glowed behind my lids, bright and alive, refusing to let the night be simple again.
