Record 50 – Signals Without Senders

A faint electric buzz moved through the stairwell. Not loud – more like the air itself shifting, like pressure changing behind the walls. I lifted my head. Repsik stopped breathing for a second. Even the dust in the corner seemed to pause.

Then the light above us flickered.
Three short pulses.
One long.

The same pattern.
Again.

Ridge returned from his patrol just in time to see it. He froze halfway down the steps. “Did you see that?”

I nodded once.
Lima let out a tiny whimper and pressed her face deep into her paws. Soot’s fur rose in a tight ridge, every muscle in him ready for something he couldn’t name.

Repsik whispered, “It’s the same pattern from earlier… isn’t it?”

It was.
Exactly the same sequence.
No drift.
No randomness.

The stairwell felt deeper suddenly – like the concrete had hollow spaces inside it, like the building itself was leaning in to hear our reactions.

Then something stranger happened.

The pulses stopped.
Not slowly.
Not fading.
They ended exactly the moment we stopped speaking.

As if the signal had waited for silence.
As if it wanted room to listen.

No one dared whisper after that.
Not even Soot.

I stood up, feeling the walls hum with leftover energy. The silence around us felt tight, stretched thin – like the whole building was holding its breath, waiting for our next move.

The night wasn’t quiet anymore.
It was aware.
