Record 60 – Steam and Stillness

The glass door of the laundromat swung inward with a soft chime that felt too loud for such an empty world. The moment we stepped inside, warm, humid air washed over us in a slow, gentle wave. After the brutal cold outside, it felt unreal – almost wrong.

Steam clung to the windows, blurring the city into shapes and shadows. Dryers hummed in lazy circles, still running on abandoned timers. Socks and shirts tumbled inside them like slow, drifting ghosts that didn’t know their world had ended.

Lima let out a thin, trembling breath. Her body loosened, her tail uncurled, her eyes softened. For the first time all day, she looked like a cat who wasn’t fighting her own shaking.

Repsik stepped onto the warm tiles, testing them with one paw, then the other. The heat seeped upward, and he closed his eyes for a moment, letting it sink in.

Soot flicked his ears like he wanted to be annoyed – but even he couldn’t hide the small sigh of relief that slipped out of him.

I moved deeper into the room, my mind scanning the space automatically:
the corners where fear could gather,
the exits we could use if danger appeared,
the warm machines that would become battle zones if tempers rose,
the shadows where someone might hide.

It felt safe.
But not stable.
Not truly ours.
More like a shelter made of warm breath and thin luck.

Even with the heat soaking into our fur, I sensed it – a tension hanging in the air like static before a storm. Warmth always drew more than comfort. It drew need. It drew conflict. It drew eyes.

This place would help us survive the night.
But warmth has its cost.
