Record 61 – The Throne of the Warmest Dryer
The moment Soot felt the heat radiating from the largest dryer, he didn’t hesitate. He launched himself onto it with a loud, territorial thump that echoed through the humid room. The metal surface vibrated beneath him, humming with steady warmth.
He sprawled across the top like a king taking a throne – tail curling around his paws, chin lifted, eyes half-closed but alert. A silent announcement: this is mine.
Lima flinched at the display and backed closer to the wall. Ridge shook his head and muttered under his breath, “This won’t last. A machine is not a home.” Repsik stepped forward, cautious and hopeful. “We should share…”
Soot cut him off with a sharp hiss, teeth flashing. The hiss wasn’t wild instinct anymore. It had intent behind it. A tactic. A warning sharpened by thought.
I watched quietly, not moving. I felt my mind break the moment down into pieces the way it had begun doing automatically: heat source – competition – dominance shift.
Soot wasn’t only warming himself. He was claiming position. Claiming authority. Using warmth as proof of strength.
Intelligence hadn’t erased instinct in any of us. It had polished it. Turned simple drives into strategies. Turned territory into symbolism.
Soot’s choice was clear: take the warmest spot, and take the power that came with it.
The dryer hummed beneath him – a deep, steady vibration, almost like a heartbeat under his paws.
