Record 62 – Fighting the Cold, Fighting Each Other

Lima curled beside a tiny heater vent near the wall. The air coming from it was barely warm, but it was the only place she felt safe enough to claim. Her thin fur quivered each time a draft cut across the room, but she pressed herself closer to the vent, trying to disappear into its weak breath. Repsik paced restlessly, tail twitching, eyes flicking from one heat source to another. He wanted warmth like all of us, but he wanted peace even more. His body leaned toward comfort; his heart leaned toward keeping us together. Ridge sat near the door, watching the room like a quiet sentinel. Every few minutes he muttered, “Heat dies. Machines break. We need more than a room of circles.” His voice held no fear, only hard-earned realism.

Soot stretched luxuriously on top of the warmest dryer and let out a low, mocking laugh. “Let me enjoy the heat while it lasts,” he said, claws tapping the metal in slow, taunting beats. His eyes slid lazily across the room, daring anyone to challenge him.

Arguments began like sparks – small, fast, dangerous. Who deserves the warmest spot? Who freezes near the door? Who gets the edges, the corners, the scraps of warmth? Who decides?

Intelligence gave us words now, reasons, logic. Instinct still gave us claws. The mix was volatile.

Repsik tried to calm Soot. Soot hissed back. Lima shrank into herself. Ridge watched, calculating which fight might explode first. And me – I felt my heart pounding as the tension tightened around us like a wire about to snap.

I understood then: the warmth wasn’t making us safe. It was making us aggressive. It was turning survival into a contest.

The heat we needed so badly was becoming its own kind of danger.
