Record 19 – The Map in Red
A second screen flared awake on the side of a tall glass tower, flooding the square with a deep red glow. It wasn’t an ad this time. It was a map – the whole world stretched across the building’s face. The continents burned red for a breath, faded to gray, then brightened again, pulsing like a slow, heavy heartbeat.
Small dots flickered across the map. Cities. New York. London. Tokyo. Kyiv. São Paulo. Each blink looked alive for a moment, then went dark again, as if the world were trying to speak through pinpricks of fading light.
Under the map, new words formed in harsh white:
GLOBAL STATUS: NO RESPONSE
The letters hung there like a verdict. Then another line appeared, slower, heavier:
AWAITING SAPIENS CONFIRMATION
Repsik tilted his head. “Sapiens… humans?” His voice was soft, shaped more by hope than certainty.
I looked at the words again. They didn’t say homo sapiens. They didn’t say humans. Just sapiens. Knowing ones. Thinking ones. Minds that rise above instinct. Minds like-
The truth pressed against me, cold and bright. It didn’t mean humans alone. It meant anyone who could understand. Anyone who could answer. Anyone awake in the way we were now.
The parrot let out a low, dark chuckle. “Congratulations. Maybe it meant you.” His wings twitched, as if he found the idea amusing and terrifying at the same time.
The city seemed to inhale after he said it. The lights around us dimmed for half a second, as if Manhattan itself had blinked.
